Unfortunately, the game on the field last night didn’t match up with the festivities surrounding it at Rosenblatt Stadium. Brandon Duckworth gave up 6 runs in his 3.1 innings. Worse, he gave up a pair of homers on the one night when there actually wasn’t a strong wind blowing out. One of the home runs was a 3-bagger to ex-Royal outfield statue Dee Brown.
The Royals let Albuquerque’s Charlie Haeger get away with a lot of wildness by not taking advantage of the seven walks he gave up. Omaha scored two off of the knuckleballer over six innings, then two more on Jeff Weaver.
I wish I had more to offer, but Day One for the promotions staff means we are extra-busy making sure all the new people know where to go and what to do. It feels a lot like opening night of a play, except half the actors/actresses haven’t had the opportunity to read the script. A lot rides on the veterans’ ability to teach on the fly, and keep the show running smoothly. Therefore, I ended up somewhere between the concourse and the press box for Kila Ka’aihue‘s home run (his 2nd on the season). Sadly, missing out on parts of the game is an occupational hazard.
Tonight and tomorrow (weather permitting), I’ll be in the stands as a regular fan, so hopefully I’ll be able to offer more insight to the rest of the series. Bruce Chen is scheduled to pitch tonight, and Brian Bannister tomorrow.
Also…I totally forgot to look for this last night, but two stories that I wrote should be in the souvenir program you can buy at the stadium. Hopefully I remember to pick one up tonight, so I can admire my work.

Dee Brown? Jeff Weaver? I would have been paralyzed with rage, and summoned the ghost of Mike Sweeney past to attack the mound!
Since I’ve already been to the new K, I need to get to Rosenblatt at some point.

Many members of my family had this irrationally intense hatred for Dee Brown and his statue-imitations in the outfield. So it really sucked to see him come back and haunt the Royals. Brown was with the Salt Lake Bees last summer, and homered in a series at Rosenblatt as well.
I wish I had been closer to the field – and less busy – when Weaver was in. I’m sure the astute fans near the visitors dugout had some fun Sweeney-related words for Weaver.
And yes, you should come to Rosenblatt. Let me know if/when that happens!
