Well, we all saw that one coming. There’s not much I can say that won’t be said better by Royals Authority, Royals Review, Rany, Posnanski and others.
What I have that the others might not is this .gif of GMDM from Jack Moore:
This was going to happen at some point; we’ve all known it since like 2007. Let’s take consolation in a few things:
1) This was not a trade; we did not lose any prospects.
2) It is one year.
3) More specifically, it is for 2011, which was going to be an ugly season anyway.
I’m not defending the signing by any means. Obviously, it’s not a move that I would have made, because publicly drooling over a half-a-WAR player seems like a silly thing for a GM to do. In Kauffman Stadium, Frenchy’s not going to hit a ton of homers, and nobody’s going to be on base for him to drive in and collect shiny RBIs. By the end of the season, the Facebook fans may even catch on to the idea that the dude’s just not that great. He’ll be ‘meh’ on good days, and an excuse to drink heavily on bad days.
None of these things are a surprise. What legitimately surprises me is that we only have to put up with it for one year. This is progress for GMDM, because even Wee Willie Bloomquist got a multi-year deal. That Moore signed his longtime crush for just one guaranteed year is a nice step in the right direction.

Primary reaction: Frustration.
It floors me that we accept a deal for one year as progress. But progress it is. When no one else even wants the guy, though, it should go without saying that you sign him for one year.
I find it harder than ever to root for this organization. We went from DDJ to Francoeur. Isn’t that a massive step downwards. Meanwhile, Moore demonstrates again that he just doesn’t understand what OBP means. OBP – you know, on base percentage… as in flip of out percentage.
Maybe if we explained OBP from the other side folks might get it. Hey, Frenchy has a .700 out percentage. See Butler has a .615 out percentage. As out percentage it expresses badness (outs are usually bad… oh, damn – there are “productive” outs…)
Never mind. As long as there is praise for “productive” outs we just can’t learn.

Because signing every crappy outfielder worked so well in 2009. Does Dayton HATE Dyson, Maier, Gordon, Lough? It surely looks that way.
