Today, I hate being a Royals fan. I don’t even like being a baseball fan on this particular page of the calendar.
Everything was going the way it was supposed to. Zack Greinke was doing well, his greatness masking the glaring weaknesses dotting the hideous turf field around him. It seemed pre-ordained that he would get the chance to lower his ERA to under 2.00, and break the team record for strikeouts along the way. He had thrown just 67 pitches through 5 innings, fanned five, and walked one. All he needed was another handful of outs.
Instead, Willie Bloomquist is forced into our lives as an “outfielder.“ He bats down what may have been a foul ball, and it turns into a two-out double. This was after the dream of a sub-2 ERA had all but died, but before the souls of the fan base had all been completely crushed.
And then, because our collective blood pressure wasn’t high enough, Mark Teahen ran what may have been the worst route in the history of outfield defense after a Delmon Young double to right, and the bases were cleared.
The Royals are still in this game. But the damage to what was left of the fan base is done. We had ONE thing working for us, ONE thing to look forward to, ONE thing to be proud of before a national TV audience.
And our ONE last day to show off the ONE thing other teams’ fans can’t make fun of was wasted because Willie Bloomquist is being sold to us as a legitimate outfielder.
I’m grumpy. Even if we win this game, I’m grumpy. This day was supposed to be Zack’s triumphant exclamation mark on his Cy Young campaign. Instead, he plays for the Royals. Wake up. The dream is over, and there is no reason to ever hope this team will ever win another game or have anything to be happy about.
