How Swype handles the names on the Royals’ 40-man

Inspired by this Lookout Landing post, and my previous adventures with the Swype keyboard system on my phone, here is what Swype suggests when I type in Royals players’ names.

PITCHERS
Arguelles             Artists
Barerra                Careers
Crow                     Crore (wtf?)
Davies                  Favors
Hochevar           Buckwheat (LOL)
Jeffress                Here’s
Mazzaro              Macao
O’Sullivan           Occultism
Pucetas               Puck’s (no doubt influenced by my frequent texting about the Glee character)
Soria                     Spurious
Teaford                Teapots
Tejeda                  Regress (!!!!!)
Texiera                Records

INFIELDERS
Aviles                   Acolytes
Betemit                Megabit
Getz                       Hertz (don’t it?)
Ka’aihue               Configure

OUTFIELDERS
Blanco                  Banco

Go for it! Might as well have a blogger for every team do this!! :)

Brilliant! But what the hell is a ‘crore?’

I have absolutely no idea! Google says it’s a number in the Indian numbering system, equivalent to ten million. Why is that in my phone?

A thing I hate about Swype is that it suggests a lot of French words. To Swype the word ‘forgot,’ i have to slog through like five different stupid French words.

I’m cool with it suggesting Spanish, because the phone is both English and Spanish. Not sure where all the French comes from, though.

  3. Mark LaFlamme

Well, my name is French but spellcheck will invariably change it to “aflame.” I’m okay with that.

Mark Aflame sounds so dramatic! Every second of Mark Aflame’s life is an adventure!

I laugh now, but wait until I accidentally set myself on fire. Have a feeling the irony will not soothe me.

Yeah, the Indian numbering system gets a little bizarre. You go from 10,000 to 1 lakh (equivalent to 100,000 – however you write it as 1,00,000) and then go to 10 lakhs (10,00,000) then to 1 crore (1,00,00,000) which as you pointed out is 10,000,000. The software was probably written, in part, by Indians, which is why it probably spits this out.
