Spring training action is well underway in Surprise, but there’s still a lot of time between now and Opening Day. I’ll be counting down the days with a collection of random Royals-related numbers. Most of them
mean nothing – this isn’t supposed to be a groundbreaking series of research –
but they’ll hopefully make the days go faster until April 5.
14 Days = 14 singles by Luis Hernandez…out of 15 hits
To say that the Royals have had trouble finding awesome infielders is an understatement. Other than Mike Aviles’ superb 2008, Kansas City has had a well-documented parade of often laughably bad infielders. We know this.
Luis Hernandez seems like a wonderful human being. I would love it if he were successful in baseball. But while his defense is fine, he just can’t hit. His bat occasionally finds a baseball, but it never goes anywhere meaningful – 14 of his 15 hits at the Major League level last year were singles. His slugging percentage was 37 points lower than his already-tiny .256 OBP.
The Royals DFA’d Hernandez in January to help make room for Noel Arguelles and Scott Podsednik.
14 was also the number of walks Kyle Farnsworth issued last season, as well as the number of runs Joakim Soria gave up.
